: Thanks for the message, a good emergency procedure - although I think I'm going to fit a socket in the boot (probably inside where the jack is kept) direct to the battery, JUST IN CASE something like this happens again. 

: Pauls suggestion of a constant monitoring charger is a good idea as well, but I often keep the car in different garages, so lugging it round would be a bit of a chore. The main lesson I've learnt is not to leave the boot open in the first place!!!
