: : Looking for a bit of advice on what products to use as I intend to flush the hydralics and re fill and bleed. * once again what is the hydraulics ? The brake fluid system ? This I changed to a Valvoline Synthetic fluid DOT4 very good tolerance against heat and since it is full synthetic it will not absorve the moisture that fast. Cost ? $5.99/quart which is enough. to flush it you need either a 2nd person who's got strong feet and lot of patient, or a bleeder tool. At around 49.99 you could buy a good quality bleedeng tool. Bleed the brakes at all corners and always top-off the reservoir, never go empty or you have to bleed it again to get the air out. Takes about 40 minutes but simple no brainer job. Recommended to use a special wrench designed for brake bleeder screws so you won't damage the head of the bolt ! Use a quality brake fluid as they last longer. BMW does not uses synthetic and they do not recommend using them - don't know why ? - DOT 3 is required DOT4 is suggested. BE VERY CAREFUL !!! BRAKE FLUID CAN DAMAGE PAINT AND ALSO AN AIR IN A BRAKE SYSTEM CAN CAUSE FAILURE IN THE BRAKES AND THERFORE SERIUS ACCIDENT COULD OCCUR ! If you are not sure about the process ask or have some professional do it. Brakes are very important, not worth to save a few bucks and later spend throusands on repair ! power steering fluid ? - This is regular ATF _ Automatic transmission fluid Dexron II/III local shop has 6 diff type, I choose a middle price range Valvoline at $2.29/quart Easy to do and safe, no harm can be caused. I drained the fluid at the lower hose and refilled it from the top, moved the steering wheel 4-5 times from left-to all the way to the right and back, topped it off and done. 20-25 minutes just a cleaning of the fluid takes 2x the time ! I put the drain can to the wrong spot half the fluid went to the floor ! : I intend to do the same with the cooling system. - That's a goodie ! I did that too ! On the left lower corner of the radiator is the drain plug. Plastic so be easy on him, use lubricant if tight ! let it out all of it, and start putting water from a garden hose to the reservoir. Let it flush for about 5 minutes ! CLose the plug and buy one of those flush concentrate in a local auto parts store, they normally 1.99-2.99 depend on brand - then flush it as recommended. The reason to go to the store after the initial flush because you need to run the engine to flush it, but the concentrate can only go into cold engine. SO by the time you buy the stuff and come back, etc. it'll cool down. Refill with flusher liquid and water. Run engine for 10 minutes - operating temperature - and then drain again. Use a water hose again and flush for an another 5 minutes. Let it drain all the way out - you could also remove the lower water hose (replace if worn or broken) and remove the last drip of water. Then use BMW anti-freeze !!! Important as the engine's head in aluminium and a cheap freeze will harm it. $12.00/gallon. You could use any other brand if they are aluminium approved, but price difference isn't that great ! I use 50-50% distilled water and anti-freeze and this is a good mixture for most climate. Do not use more then 75% of antifreeze and neither more then 75% water ! a Good mixture is the key to a long water pump life and a cool run ! Once done, run the engine with a reservoir cap on and bleed the system at the thermostat housing. There is a small bolt standing up, you open that and a water should pee out to the left side. If it flows and no bubbles then close it and call it a good job. During the job watch the temperature gauge just to be on a safe side ! Other thing, the reservoir cap seal has to be good, otherwise there isn't enough pressure and overheating could occur. SO if you think that is oldish then replace ! : Do I go to my local dealer or is there a better cheaper alternative. You do not need to buy anything at the dealer but as many cases they aren't that much more expensive then a quality other stuff. And they are recommended by BMW so at least you know what you putting into your Z1 or any other bimmer. if there is an another hydraulics then I don't know about it, the only hydraulics is really the brake and power steering on our car, so I hope it explains it! :
good night everybody, lets continue on the weekend... I just love this stuff ! Laszlo
