Hi Ian, Have you checked the thick round connector under the intake manifold/throttle valve? The contacts are 30 years old and are oxidising. If these contacts are black, they should be replaced. The crimp contacts (male and female) are available from BMW as a spare part, but it's a really nasty job...

we use the BMW part-no: 51479128456 from the Z4
..and the rectangle version from the Z3 51472261407 (this is much cheaper)
These nets are easy to install and fits perfect into the Z1

Hi Robert, I don't think that the problem is the relay but if so, the relais of the e31, e32 e34 and e36/Z3 should fit too. Who has taken off the rear wing? RKV? - Than it should be a repaair for free, otherwise you can try to open the cap of the connector at the cable, check wich one (7 or 3) has no connection to ground, make a new connection from that pin to the chassis. (It's not perfect but it will work )
