Can't comment on silicone but mine had a new mohair fitted just before I got it 4 years ago.
Used BMW stuff first time but have used AutoGlym since. Vacuum and shampoo with AG every few months - re-treat with AG sealer twice a year (autumn and spring) - still looks like new.

Welcome. Presume that having fitted new fob batteries the red transmit LED is illuminating. If so you may need to reprogram fobs to receiver. This shot is of the driver's side sill on a 98 pre-facelift. IIRC you have to take it off to access one of the sill mounting bolts. Have just had a look through the photos I took of mine to support this view
It is straightforward to remove and I would advise you take it off anyway to examine the wing internals as the front bottom corner is a corrosion point.

`impa' is typo - littlefeller has INPA.
If you can access someone with kit then what Robert says is correct - you connect the 20pin and on INPA go to Body - Airbag and clear error codes. If all is well they will stay out.

IIRC the 'Battery Master Switch' was fitted at the factory so the battery was disconnected while the vehicle was in transit. The dealer removed the switch as part of the PDI.
