For a Z3 3.0 with LSD capacities are:

Gearbox 1.3 litres
Diff 1.7 litres

So you actually have to buy 2 x 1 litre bottles of each.

That's the BMW way. All I can say is that while the level in my gearbox was OK and the old oil looked clean enough, it did make a difference to the gearshift when it was changed. However "hi-tec" the oils are these days I still think changing it can only be a good thing. I'm told that some...

Absolutely.

Someone said on another thread that the oil is good for the life of the gearbox, which will be longer if you change the oil.

Changing the oil also improves the gearshift. Another sure indication it's doing some good.

I just fitted the Earls clutch hose and changed the gearbox oil.

Very noticeable improvement. Much more feel in the clutch pedal and improved gearchange.

Sealed for life? What a load of rubbish! New oil can do nothing but good.

Gearbox and Diff

I've never really believed in this "sealed for life" malarky for gearboxes and diffs. If it's done 50,000 or more miles how can it not benefit from new oil? Anyway, I've just changed the oil in the gearbox and diff on my 3.0 Z3. I used Fuchs Titan Sintofluid SAE 75W-80 for the gearbox and ...

Jonttt,

You said this brace rubbed a bit on the soundproofing but what was the clearance like over the engine?

The e-tech brace seems to be very close to the engine. See pics in this thread.

Thanks for the pics fof the e-tech.

Looks like it's pretty much up to the job. Simple and probably effective.

I probably wouldn't have been quite so direct as Mike () but had come to the conclusion the chromiumtech one was overly complex and possibly less effective.

The diagnostic socket is on the n/s on my car too so I'd have the same issue and rerouting a hose, while fairly trivial, is a bit of a nuisance. Maybe I'll go for an e-tech brace instead. Is your Castrol oil labelled as "LL04" which I believe is the latest BMW approved standard?

Also, you could ask the guys at Opie Oils - they're very knowledgeable and can be very helpful.
Also likely to be cheaper than a BMW $tealer.

What does the manual say for the oil specification?

Synthetic oil is expensive so if you could use the 0w30 you've got it would be a good thing.

A BMW $tealer will sell you top of the range Castrol and if you pay a little extra, a nice black case to store the bottle in. :)
