More likely to be the wire than the micro switch, just trace the loom down the roof frame.

Re: Rear brake shoe fixing
You can reverse engineer this by getting long brake shoe pins, washers and springs, fit the pins though the rear of the backing plate, through the brake shoes, pop on the spring and then the retaining washer. Thi pins I am talking about are in the image below. http://calipercover.info/wp-content/upl...

Re: Electric roof failure
Never heard of a roof motor failing, there is a micro switch in the roof on the passenger side and a wire that runs down the frame, check this wire as they can become brittle and break, another thing to look at is your brake switch, do your brake lights work?

If you are looking for a quick cheap fix replace like for like, dropping in a 2.2 or 2.8 is a bit more of a project, I am pretty sure a t reg 1.9 will be a M44 engine so you should be able to pick one up quite cheaply.

If you are lucky you may still have the part number tag on the OEM springs, this will help identify the correct part, other than that as Pingu states it is off to BMW to get the correct part number.

Don't buy cheap, make sure they are the same tensile strength as the OEM ones. When buying new the tapered part of the wheel bolt needs to be 60 degrees IIRC.

Do as you do on the 3.0, Invest in a decent quality set of winter snow tyres and put them on a spare set of rims if you can, the difference thay make in the cold weather is huge, I have run a set on my daily driver for the past few years and I could not believe the difference they make.

With the DSC light on it could be something as simple as a sensor, the car thinks it is permanently in a state of flux and that is why it is sluggish, give me a shout if you want me to hook up my PC to see if we can see anything.

There's no 'fiddling' required! You just need calipers from a 6 cylinder (I have some from an E46) and vented discs. Unbolt the old stuff, bolt on the new, bleed the brakes and away you go. Just to add to this, the piston size in the calipers throughout the range of the Z3s (excluding ///Ms) is the...
