Oil choice...

Post by Mac The Tank »

Looking to change the oil in the next week or two now the weather has perked up a bit, I'm planning to stick to 5w40 as it's usually only used up to 20 miles at a time in the summer months?

Any comments on Shell Helix Ultra vs Mobil 1 new life?

A lot of personal preference comes into play when choosing the "best" engine oil. Both the examples are top, premium brands that will give you no problems whatsoever. I agree with the basic choice i.e. 5W/40 and fully synthetic. If costs are an issue there is no need to spend the premium/brand price as engine oil with identical viscosity and technical ratings can be bought much cheaper e.g. Euro Car Parts own brand.

Make sure you change the two small o rings on the shaft that hold the oil filter in. If those fail you open yourself to issues. Should be done every oil change.

CASTROL EDGE 5/W40 Fully Synthetic is what I use... somewhat less expensive than Shell but also full synthetic ans same spec viscosity range.

I am using Triple QX 5W 40. Carparts4Less £12.49, change every year at about 5,000 miles. Meets all the specs. I know others have used it on here with no problems so I thought I would give it a try.
Just two questions, who makes it? and how much mark up must there be on those 'top' brands that some people seem compelled to buy?
