Insurance companies and wheels, its a con!

Post by tags »

Original BMW wheels are usually more expensive to replace from BMW than decent aftermarket alternatives. Hence, if i changed my wheels for a different set of rims, it would be cheaper for the insurance company to replace those than a set of original BMW rims.....with me so far....so why do we have to tell the insurance and why do they rip us off for the privelidge?

I am just ranting at the minute as its time to renew insurance and it always makes me angry

renewing my insurance usually makes me faint :shake:

little point to remember and rile you even more, is its nearly got to the point where most of your insurance premium is down to personal injury claims rather than vehicle repairs..... welcome to the sue society
On the majority, vehicles are now cheaper to repair...

You're not the first to call me that and you won't be the last.

I do prefer the term Bastard though...it's more fitting.

Actually, I think **** is far more appropriate in your case.

Apologies to any minors or those with a fluffy disposition, but hey, I like to tell it like it is

It's not rocket science is it?

All you need to do is get to know your local mechanic. Last year I smashed up my 5 series on the way back from the reading branch christmas party. Dropped it off at the local garage, quick phone call to my grease monkey pal and all modifications were removed and replaced with standard parts with plenty of time to spare before the assessor turned up.

25K in the pocket, thank you very much sir.

Sounds about right considering the context of your other posts on here.

Tags,

The reason insurance companies load for mods is becasue they either make the car more expensive to repair or because they make the car more of a risk. More of a risk meaning it stands out and is more liely to get vandalised or nicked and more of a risk, because not all mods make the car safer to drive than standard.

Typically people replace the wheels with more expensive aftermarket ones to make it look better. As such they fall into both catagories. You just seem to be the unfortunate victim of statistics here. An aftermarket wheel is an aftermarket wheel in their eyes. :(

Interesting that Steve Chesterfield, alias X5 Road King, is prepared to admit, on an open forum, that he successfully committed, what to all intents and purposes, is fraud and to the tune of £25,000.
I wonder if any of the forum members, in the insurance business would like to comment.

Well let's hope the powers that be aren't reading this forum. If they are, Sorry Directline for breaking the terms of our agreement, rest assured your 25K has been invested wisely

And Merry Xmas.

With reference to 'getting a grease monkey to replce the parts to original'...

I had the misfoture to badly smash one of my zeds a few years back, very early in the morning on the motorway on black ice  (not gritted in -5 deg C). The car was taken straight to BMW.

The insurance assessor apparently spent 8 hours there (BMW told me) going over the car with a fine toothcomb to find anything to 'upset' the claim.

Boy, was I glad the car was exactly as described, with four good tyres...

- don't bank on getting your friend to 'see the car' first... you just wouldn't be quite so happy with a 25k loss... and noone else would insure you again.

I didn't get that much of a hike when i insured Charlotte with all her mods. The difference between the internet cost with no mods and the over the phone quote with all the mods was only £75. All I did was send the company a brochure of Schnitzer accessories (Cheers Giles) she has fitted and the literature of the Strong Stut stuff fitted. They were more interested to know what a "Butt Strut" was and what it did than they were witht the wheels or exhaust system.

My advice is tell them everything, that way if it all goes wrong then they can't back out. :-):-)
