Depends on your budget.

We stayed at Bellagio which is fantastic. I was told that Luxor wasn't up to much but at the end of the day they all lok the same when you're asleep.

Mandalay Bay is great. Ask for the suites at the end of the corridors, they are magic with a panoramic view up the strip. I spent 2 weeks living there on company business. Well recommended.

Venetian or Bellagio if you can, the suites at the Venetian were smashing. Caesars Palace is also very good.

Avoid Sahara, Circus Circus, Flamingo, Tropicana, Ballys, Stratosphere, New York New York, Monte Carlo, Imperial Palace, Luxor, Alladin and Excalibur

Second choices, Paris, Wynns (expensive), Mandalay Bay, Treasure Island, Mirage

Been there a few times it's great fun if you can stand the touts with their escort cards.

Really depends on your budget. Most of the strip hotels are ok. The more expensive ones have less children running up and down the corridors. If your budget is really tight, there are a lot of decent hotels just off the main strip.

My wife and I LOVE vegas and have been there 3 times now. We like to hotel hop so this is why I can give such a comprehensive overview.

One thing I can say is there is not one hotel that is perfect for anyone.

1) If you want to be in the center of it all then Bellagio is a good bet. The rooms are nice, but are not the same standard as other hotels.

2) If you want a great central hotel, but dont want to be in the "middle of it" then ARIA is a great bet. The hallways are scented, the suites have two televisions, We even had a view from the 42nd floor down over the bellagio fountains. Best thing is, this is a non gambling hotel, so no riff raf, but it is connected to Belagio and City Center the very very upmarket shopping which has a casino.

3) If you want to be slightly out of the center and in a NON gambling hotel then the The Platinum is amazing. The suit we had was nearly 1000 sq ft, a kitchen, valet parking, balcony, living room, a massive jet tub. And we only paid £70 a night with a view toward the back of Balyls and Ceasars palace. Possibly my super saver tip. The walk is only 300 yards and you are at the intersection of Flamingo and The Blvd.

4) We stayed at the Encore on our honeymoon and this was just amazing if you want a good pool. There is a bar in the pool and it has a seperate adult pool so no splashing kids. It is connected to the Wynn and then the venetian etc.. so its a great place to stay if you want a little more "up market" entertainment.

5) MGM Grand. although its a fair way out, the rooms were comparable to Belagio but at under half the price.

HOTELS TO AVOID. Sometime because of the people, but mostly because of the atmosphere. If you are going to Vegas make sure you experience the nice side of it. It can be quite seedy if you are in the wrong place.

Stratosphere (its 3 miles from anything. Rooms are cheap because it is cheap)
Imperial Palace (Only hardcore gamblers stay there, cheap and central, but you get what you pay for)
Ballys (OMG Yuck.. its like a sticky floored pub)
Luxor (too far away and its a little bit run down)
New York New York (its ok, but the same state as Luxor)
Ceasars Palace (very pricy and very old)

We have not stayed in PH towers, MGM Signature, Paris, Best Westerns, Trump, Wynn, Mirage, Treasure Island, Harrahs,

SECOND TO WORST PRIZE
Excaliber (or Excabulator as my wife refered to it. Its like walking into a 1970s idiot themed pub with slot machines.)

WORST PRIZE
Circus circus... (hell has a new definition! Expect your shoes to need a clean and for your hair to get gum in it as you walk through. Seriously OMG)

I am sure I can help find you a good deal as we spent weeks and weeks picking out the best options.

Make sure you get a nice car too. You will need it, I managed a dodge challenger v8 last time for not much more than a full size Chevy Impala V6. There are tricks you can play to get free stuff.

Another vote for the Bellagio.

Grand Canyon helicopter trip is also very worthwhile.

Thanks everyone (so far!)

I knew you guys would have been to Vegas!

I have been looking into the trip a fair bit today... plenty more time to go! The Bellagio is fully booked that week, so is Aria and Platinum. The Venetian won't allow bookings this far in advance!

The Encore is about 33% more expensive than the other hotel we can stay at, now I'm not tight, but I am skint (front end re-spray and pooped welds and cracked boot floor have seen to that). It is a stag do so cost is at a premium for many of the attendees.

The MGM is huge 5000+ rooms but looks good, even if very very busy.

Paris is about on budget

So is the Manadalay Bay (also mentioned on Me and my Monkey by R Williams which has always made me laugh!)

Mirage is the same price as both Paris and Manadalay bay

Treasure island is very on budget

I'm thinking not the Luxor or Circus Circus..... might make the father in law stay there!

thanks for your help, keep it coming

We may go back again later this year and will probably stay at Planet Hollywood for 5 nights, its a shame that the Hard Rock is not on the strip but again if we go back will stay there for the weekend nights.

If you get chance go to the gunstore and shoot some uzi's!!!!! and also the car display on the 5th floor of the Imperial Palace is pretty amazing.

If its a stag do, then the MGM is perfect.
It has two massive pools, a few food courts, a couple of lions and is a great deal. Its a little way to walk to the center of the strip, but there is the tram which will take you all the way up to Bally's which is where the guys hand out the prossie leaflets. (weh hey !)

Its a pretty nice walk up the strip and they have just redone most of the eastern side of the strip as you walk up from MGM. I know it sounds stupid, but there are not that many raised bridge crossings down near MGM so you would need to walk about a little.

Casino as MGM is pretty average, but then casino's are all a bit the same on the strip. If you want an evening of gambling head up to Freemont as the casino's there have much lower buy-ins for Blackjack and Roulette so your money will last a lot longer. Strip casinos are there to extract as much money as possible from a captive audience.

Make sure you all go to Johnny Rockets (burger place) for at least one burger, they are amazing and really cheap.

Be careful with the gun place, it can end up costing you a lot of money at some places as they charge you per shell you fire. So an Uzi is a very bad idea. Others are not like that, but best to check first.

If you want a day out, the Damn is pretty cool if you do the full tour. Sounds naff, buts its really interesting. Only thing is that you would NEED a car as its out in Boulder City to the south.

Another option if you dont like walking is Flamingo's. Its cheap, tacky, central but there are a choice of normal (UK standard) or luxury (pretty nice) rooms which are not much of a price difference. Plus they have an OK pool and you dont need to worry about much else as there are all the major things within stones throwing (not recommended) distance.

For best shopping. Go directly south to Town Square west side of the strip. there are a few restaurants, all the great american clothes shops, a cinema that wont be a million dollars for a seat and the BEST sports bar. Food is great and each table can see at least two TV's. They have over 300 beers on tap to boot !

If you are wanting shopping I have all the malls programmed into my sat nav, but there are a few great (non tourist) ones. Meadows Mall is the one that springs to mind first which is out in Henderson.

I am very jealous of anyone who is going to Vegas as I would quite happily move there given half a chance. Top down motoring ALL year round, how much fun is that !

I went in 2005 and stayed in the Sahara... yes its a cheaper hotel but the tables were brill and ended up coming home with some cash

Theres also a monorail that runs behind the hotels so your never more than 10-15mins away from the center....

And yes while your there you must go on a helicoptor trip into the grand canyon... just awsome....

Well it's update time!

Despite my disagreement with a dear, new alternator, new tyres, service and now a fairly rough suspension noise sending my car back to the garage for the 3rd time in a month Vegas is still on the cards!

We are staying at the Paris and I have seen this

http://www.alllasvegastours.com/Body.as ... ws#Reviews

Canyon helicopter tour, flight from Vegas, so no long coach journey!

Anyone got any other recommendations for things to do whilst we are there?

Not much motorsport on the time we go and US sports don't really seem to happen in Nevada, something to do with gambling laws of all things!

Thanks all

The tour looks good but I always look at the reviews of these things from low to high and it's worth noting the comments about bad seats in the helicopter, extra airport charge of $40 and pilots not that interested.

If doing one of these trips I'd have a look round Vegas when I got there and ask folk for recommendations.

Have a good trip

Go and take a look at the Hoover Dam. Definitely worth a day out, the tour is interesting stuff even if you're only vaguely interested in engineering.

The Grand Canyon is worth it too - spectacular. I had my trip in a small plane but a helicopter flight with a landing near the glass walkway over the rim would be even better.
