Hello one and all!

Just wondering if there is anybody out there who would be able to advise how much I should expect to pay Berry's, Goldsmiths, Beaverbrooks etc for a service on my TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 5. It will shortly be due a service, which TAG Heuer recommend is carried out every 2 years.

I'm guessing cost will vary depending on the movement.

Curious off topic thread - however at any of the big jewellers expect there to be a very hefty price, plus a waiting time as they have to either send it away or wait for the chap to pop in (once a month). Alternatively try Debenhams, they are much cheaper and, contrary to what Goldsmiths etc would have you believe - they can reseal it perfectly and provide a warranty - I have an Omega Seamaster and the GF has a TAG and that is where both of them go and the batteries are around £50-£70. They are also serviced when the battery is replaced for an extra £20-£40 not every 2 years as the makers very kindly suggest !!

For reference, everyone I know who has a TAG gets a maximum of 24 months out of a battery - Ive had my Omega 12 years and had the 2nd battery change last month

My BMW watch is much like the "old tech" BMW's...a little heavy on consumption...new battery every 18 months - but batteries are just £7 each...
Must add it has all the bells and whistles - stop watch / elapsed time etc etc....

Best watch battery is the Swiss brand Renata - only a couple of quid to buy but some specialists may charge a lot more to put one in.

Thanks very much for all your replies. However, the Calibre 5 movement in my TAG is automatic, so does not use a battery.

That being the case, I would imagine it will have to be sent away?

In fairness, some of the premium watches like the brands mentioned are precision instruments and need to be cleaned by experts. Something like a traditional movement Rolex Submariner – is waterproof to a certain depth and so an OE service would involve fitting new o-rings to the case and winder – which are coated in a light form of grease and tightened to a specific torque. The watch is then immersed in water and tested under pressure to simulate water depth up to that specified by the manufacturer. Rolex service about £500.

Cheers Del, that's a ball park figure for me to work with - the Carrera isn't designed to withstand pressure in the way that dive watches are, but there will be shockproof tests and seal replacements carried out along with some lubrication. Hats off to the technicians that service these pieces... imagine replacing a spring!

I send mine direct to TAG. Call them up, they send you a box and you ship it to them. Comes back in a nice new box also. I have only had good service form them.

Every two years ! That's very nice of them to 'recommend' that for you.
Personally I go 5 years if it's something I wear often. The original manufacturer is best if you have the ££. But search online and you will find many watch servicing companies that will do a comparable job for a lot less.

The premium auto watch services eg Rolex include a full refurb I've the watches some back like new but you do pay for it I've c£500. Wit so many good fakes around you also get a form of insurance if your looking to sell and don't have original box and papers.

Two years is a bit regular for me. My Navitimer has not been serviced for 7 and still keeps within 10 secs per month. My Daytona is only 6 month old and my current daily, seems to be running to c +2 sec per month and won't be getting a service until it's time keeping requires it which hopefully will be many years.

My uncle has a vast collection and has advised that servicing is not mandatory as modern oils are so pure. But as I wear the watch regularly I am conscious of wear on the springs.

The bracelet and side the case with the crown are also a little scratched, so hopefully these could be polished out, too.
I have been using Cape Cod polishing cloths to keep it clean which I find great and help disguise the scratches a little, but obviously if TAG could remove them altogether that would be fantastic.

Would not be looking to sell, but it's nice to have a collection of history for my inner geek.

Those Cape Cod polishing cloths are great. I use them myself on my SS watches.
