I seem to be having a problem with private messages. I get an indication that the message has been sent but it stays in my out box and doesn't appear in my 'sent messages' box. Am I doing something wrong??

That is the correct behaviour. It just doesn't work like Outlook, that's all. The message will only move from your Outbox to Sent when the recipient logs in.
