Z1 sill removal
Z1 sill removal
I'd like to remove the passenger sill, is there a step by step guide ?

Re: Z1 sill removal
Gazza,
Just look at the BMW Z1.co.uk website where there is a description of side panel removal.
This description appears to have been "lifted" from the BMW Z1 Repair CD and does not mention the removal of the small plastic cap in the rear wheel arch which is adjacent to the top rear corner of the panel and essential!

I think that maybe the problem, the rear of the sill is out of place.Cabrioot wrote:Be carfull when removing and take yor time for it, before you now you brake a fixing.

Re: Z1 sill removal
If you haven't already:
1. Jack up car and remove small plastic cover inside rear wheel arch, 8/10mm socket
2. Remove all Torq lower sill screws. Be careful the retaining nuts do not come away from body.
3. Loosen the 10mm vertical nut in rear wheel arch, but do not remove.
4. Lay large soft material along entire side of car.
5. Front inner arch liner, must be 'persuaded' from behind the side panel. Pull panel gently towards you and peel the liner edge outwards. If liner has become brittle, this may be hard to do without it breaking into little pieces. (Try removing front liner 8mm screws, that may give it more wiggle room to move about)
6. Slide panel backwards, might be stiff, apply firm pull from the front, (use gloves if you are a gold ring fingered fan).
7. Either have someone hold the rear section or support it with your right hand, so it does not catch you by surprise and drop suddenly to the floor and damage anything.
While your down there, give the entire area a clean, front to back, clean and regrease door runners with white grease. Clean rear section of panel thoroughly especially U shaped lugs and rubber grommets it slides onto, then use white spray grease on all.
There are 3x U shaped lugs on the rear of the panel.
1x Front Wheel
1x rear wheel
1x LHS of door
Place panel into position against car and push firmly on front area, to ensure when panel slides back on, both front lugs catch. Then do the front inner arch persuasion thing again and try not to break it.
Sounds complicated, but its pretty straightforward.

Re: Z1 sill removal
Simply that it is white in colour, comes in a spray form and is very thin, so less friction.Cabrioot wrote:All the innerliners of my car where brittle and have changed them all 4.

Re: Z1 sill removal
The rear fixing plate had come unstuck from the sill.
The front wheel well liner fell apart

Probably fatigue from passing through the sound barrier too many times.Gazza wrote:The front wheel well liner fell apart

Re: Z1 sill removal
Good news, they have remade the front liners using some kind of recycled material, so its quite flexible, with a hint of green in it, but it does mean dropping the suspension leg.
