Chrome windscreen surround fitted

Post by Tori »

It's on at last along with a nice chip and crack free windscreen.

Its a doddle to fit with the glass out (10 mins) although I doubt it's too hard with it in.

Anyway some pictures for you.

Looks really good Tori 8-)

How did you fit it in the end? did you use the tabs or break them off and the holes? Does it just stick on?

It does stick on yes. We left the tabs in place which means the windscreen will prevent it lifting at the bottom of the pillars, the other tabs that wrap around to the inside of the A pillar at the top actually get covered br the door seal. BMW must drill holes for the clips that hold this because there are no ready made holes for the clips, we have not bothered to use them instead we have run a bead of silicone to help keep it in place, not that I think its going to move :D

Thanks Tori, I'm kinda wandering how much harder it would be with the screen in place i.e. trying to stick it in place and ensuring the windcreen rubber goes over the top :|

I'd say you would need more than one pair of hands.

Looking good :thumb: ties in with the rest of the chrome parts on the car.

What wheels are on your car by the way? Do you have any close up pictures of them, they look similar to BBS LM's but I see you have BMW centre caps. I'm toying with the idea of fitting these centres to my wheels :)

They are not LM's but i'd say they are styled on them, I got them from BM Autosport. They came with standard slightly domed centre caps but I did not like them. Hubby got hold of flat genuine metal centre logo's cleaned the glue off them and stuck them to the domed cap with some silicone.

WOW!

That the first Z3 I've seen with Crome Gills that I like - goes so well with the crome surround for the windscreen and the colour of the car... Perfect colour combination! And I love the wheels!

So all in all a very nice motor!!!!

Gotta agree with Ferdinand.

There are so few colours which could wear that much chrome, but yours is definitely one of them. Nice subtle contrast and great looking Zed.

Good job! :thumb:

Just wondering, where do you get those chrome surrounds from?
Or is it vinyl wrap?

I am not a fan for chrome surrounds, side grills and door handles, but I must admit that on this car it looks acceptable :)

It's a thumbs up from me too, not a huge fan of chrome either but I think you have your car looking spot on. It's a credit to you. :)

Cheers

Have to agree with Dave on this. Not a big fan of Chrome, but this car looks great.A credit to the owner.I do like the colour, not too many of them about.Infact I was going to look at one at 'Martyns cars', Chertsey, but then decided I didn't really want to go that far. They had a 58,000 mile one in that colour with matching pale blue leather,£3450, I think. Also a green one with green leather,35,000 miles, both look nice on the photos.

I just checked my BMW dealer source out of curiosity. I was surprised to find that price is only £70 for each side (2 sides plus central coupler). So with coupler and the plastic rivets it should be no more than £150. That's Rybrook who are generally expensive. So maybe less at someone like Trainer in Swansea where I get my bits - typically 10-20%+ cheaper.

Fleabag also has a choice of 3 second-hand on ebay. But condition doesn't sound perfect and if you're gonna bling it, bling it right. He's looking for £125 so expensive compared to new and you need to remove it yourself. He's also not the most accessible of people and will happily tell you that himself.

so you say £70 for each side plus a central coupler, does that mean it is in 3 parts ? with a join..

as if i was going to vinyl wrap it i would probably have a join in it ... i have a look on the weekend at other chrome surrounds to see how they are fitted...

I am not a fan of chrome surrounds, side gills and door handles on Z3's full stop!...... But wouldn't life be grim if all our cars looked the same? If you like it, that's all that matters.

I do like a bit of bling if it is done right! This model accepts it well. It is meant to be a fun car for the summer so it should reflect that.
My other classic (urquattro) is pretty much standard with just a few embellishments

Interesting but when I had a new windscreen fitted by a BMW dealer they actually replaced the chrome surround as part of the job,
considered it would be damaged in being removed and replaced.
The car had the chrome fitted as a factory option.
S346A CHROME LINE EXTERIEUR ----- seems to be Screen surround , door handles and over centre brake light.

Oddly , the screen and surround were available for next day delivery, but I also wanted new wiper blades and these were on 8 weeks delivery . Supplied garage with Bosch and they fitted them.
