Z3 2.2i Sump replacement......
Z3 2.2i Sump replacement......
I have a hairline crack on the sump of the Z3. Car is a 7/01 build 2.2i.
realoem says sump part number is 11131437001
This lists at over £400 from BMW so I bought a sump from a BMW breaker.
Now for the query/potential problem
The sourced part I have in front of me has the following numbers cast on it & spaced as below, (as well as BMW emblem casting)
1 432 705.9
(line break)
P681/4 226
line break
+GF+AM2.2
Obviously these numbers do not resemble the quoted realoem part number
or for that matter any other BMW part numbers
I have tried entering last 7 and various tweaks but nothing seems to show as a match on real oem or google.
Part sourced has a tag on it with the number 20374 1432705 all tagged as coming from BMW Z3 albeit says 2100cc & not 2.2i or 2171cc which I believe is actual engine capacity.
Sump as sourced has smooth underside and distinct drop to one side, however, the item on my car has a distinct textured veined appearance
I suspect but am not sure that I have been supplied a non Z3 sump from an E46 or other cross reference sumped car.
Copy of listing for part sourced from ebay can be viewed by clicking here
Is this the wrong part ?
Does anyone know how to get a realoem recognised part number from this sump ?
Thanks

Black Z3 2.2 & Black X5 4.4 Sport.
That requires dropping the engine cover.
The cast numbers are on the forward most part of the sump which cannot be viewed without removing same. Cant access my garage as its frustratingly presently used for storeage. Time to do this presently is also an issue.
The issue could be easily clarified if the numbers cast on the sourced sump actually related to a part number but sadly they dont:roll:
The new part doesn't look right at all.
I am not a mechanic but know enough in that I easily performed my last oil service ok. I should add that the crack to my sump was not caused by me over tightening the sump bolt
In abscence of info from kind folk on forums, (or from speaking to supplier tomorrow) , I will take car to trusted bmw indy this week & get a professional opinion from someone used to taking these cars apart.
Very frustrating, just forked out for a new wishbone on Z3 as well as having to source a replacement radio module for the X5.
I have often raised eyebrows at folk who simply drive to dealership & hand over plastic regardless, however, I can see why folk would want to avoid such car hassles as I am currently having.

Cheers,
Frustrating as have spent a couple of hours checking images online, realoem & the sourced part against mine. Eventually convinced seller my concerns were legitimate.
Sump returned to Midland BM - Now need to again try to source another sump or get existing one professionally repaired.
Oh well - keeps me busy

Well after paying for 3 sumps (2nd one never even arrived), the most recently paid for one is with car at indy & with view to fitting same if it is the correct item, (breaker assures me it should be ok).
If wrong one then indy has agreed he will cause the existing sump to be professionally welded.
Fingers crossed as this has been a P.I.T.A. to sort thus far.

Thanks for the info Gazza.
Car & sump now with Rich at Barker Motor Works. Totally sick of all the sump dramas from various salvage suppliers so have given up & left car with him to sort.
I just hope he doesnt find anything else wrong with it.
I will seriously bear in mind your recommendation for the future

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..
If the numbers are stamped on the forward part of the sump that is not visible without dropping the engine I have the following idea. Not sure if it is possible to get a hand to the stamped numbers but if so then get a piece of plasticine, reach round and press onto the stamped numbers, remove it, use a big felt tip pen on the impressed plasticine and print onto some paper, viola!! Of course if you cant actually reach the numbers this is totally useless.
