A momentous day for my Zed

Post by TR4man »

An important milestone for my little Zed occured today - it reached 100,000 miles.

I bought it last August with 81,000 miles and have done 19,000 in nine months :)

I did something silly and recorded the event for posterity (see below  ) but I couldn't let the occasion pass by.

Here are I couple of photos showing where I've been today - can anyone recognise the location?

I couldn't help but notice you have ///M dials but it isn't, is it?

Could it be the airship hangars built for R100 & R101 at Cardington near Bedford ?

Stupot 50 - no it's just a bog-standard 2.0 wide body, but I think that the dials (and the steering wheel, gear knob and gaitor) with the ///M logos are all original factory fitted extras. Unless of course someone knows better!

Zedcarer - spot on!

Happy momentous day!

:nerd: Those dials are definitely from an S50 ///MR. The S50 was the only (UK spec) model to have that logo on the dial and I'm not sure that your 2.0 would reach 155mph as the speedo suggests!
The dash pod must've been swapped out at some time, and not an easy job because AFAIK the ECU has to agree with the mileage figures on the pod.
To be honest, I'm surprised that unit is compatible with your car at all. :puzzle:

I guess it's possible that just the circular cards were fitted into the original unit...

You're correct that the other bits were optional extras from new.

That's what I thought, mine has all the other logo's which are detailed on the build sheet but not on the main dials

Congrats on the 100k - at my present rate of annual mileage I should get there around 2020. :D

Ahem, my 1.9 has a speedo that goes to 155 mph and the rest of the dials look just the same as those. If you change the cluster, the higher mileage between the new cluster and the ECU is supposed to be taken - if they don't agree, as tamper dot is supposed to be illuminated - however as pingu found out, things don't necessarily behave as described. I'd go with replacement cluster, as the logo looks too good to be non-OEM.

Why so?

It's not a sad occasion.

My Zed is no trailer queen - it has to earn it's keep

You should be embarrassed for not using it more! It is like owning a racehorse and not letting it out of the stable.

I also think the more they are used (cars, not racehorses) the less likely things are to go wrong.

Now promise your nice Uncle Peter that tomorrow you'll take your Zed out and give it a good thrashing - it'll thank you for it!

I find reaching the pedals rather difficult when I am working in another country.

Now that's a pretty feeble excuse. PM me your address and I'll whizz around tomorrow and show it a good time!

I want to get down to around 40p per mile. At the moment I'm on about 75p per mile. The only way to do that is to drive it :D . Looks like you have the same plan.

They are not M dials, unless someone has blacked out a few thousand revs on the rev-counter  .

Well the red needles are not a standard cluster - mine are white - so my guess is that it is off a US spec ///M roadster, which had a different engine to our S50 and S54-engined ///M roadsters.

RED's needles are RED just like those above.... :puzzle:
Yep, could be off one of those crappy under-powered American S52s.

What on earth is an S52?

Is it a later version of a B52?

It's a faster version of the M52 - and no I don't mean it has an extra lane and an 80 mph speed limit!
