M54 Radiator shroud 171017153214

Post by fish »

Just inspecting my radiator with a view to removing en route to the water pump…

Have noted the shroud is bust at the bottom corner and it flaps around a bit…(not a lot), but would prefer to replace…will check at dealers as the only souce looks to be the USA via ebay…

However…do "your" M54 shrouds cover your fan? Mine hardly doesn't and there is a quite a bit of fan on view when the engine is running, so suspicious its the perhaps the wrong shroud…..just thinking, tie, mechanic, slowly strangled to death etc….

On my 2.8 the rear half of the fan blades are not covered by the shroud.

I have just last evening read that the M54 engines - dual vanos - only have the engine fan as a "supplemental" fan, and that the electric fan carries the main responsibility for engine cooling.... It was in the Bentleys manual...
I also went out to have a look at my fan this morning, and unlike the 2.8's which have a viscous clutch, the M54 fan seems to be a fairly free floating device without much use except possibly "tradition"... In fact, I took my car for a thorough chassis and engine wash this morning, and was somewhat surprised to note the water jet was driving the engine fan so fast it was "humming"...which suggests it doesn't have a viscous clutch...
If you have a copy of the Bentleys, perhaps you could read up on it and correct me if I have misunderstood something...

Here is a photo of my 3 litre taken a few minutes ago. It looks about the same (except for the tape) :) Image

Thanks guys...cant seem to get my links working today for my photo....

But yeah, just surprised that so much raw fan blade is on show....I would have expected a deeper shroud to cover the fan....

Anyway, no issues with stock and availability so adding to my parts list....

The fan shroud is not there to for the purposes of protection from the fan blades. It's purpose is to increase airflow coverage through the radiator when the fan is the only means of air induction, i.e. when the vehicle is stationary. In this condition it is preferable to have the fan blades half covered to improve the 'splash effect' of the air inside the engine compartment because the engine itself is restricting the airflow.
