Z3 2.2 Sport Illuminated Gear knob top

Post by Mcjazz »

Hi There

Can you buy a replacement transparent cover at the top of the gear knob which has the gears on it and illuminates when the lights are on. Mine came off and has gone missing.
The gear Knob has been glued on by a previous owner so not easy to get off hence question about replacing this part and not the whole thing.

Many Thanks

I got a new m type gear knob off eBay that is lighted but I could not find any thing to connect the wires to on my z3. Some one had tried to prize the disc off the top of my gear knob that's why I changed it

If you lift the gaitor up you should find the connector lying in front (behind it) of the gear lever, the wires from your illuminated gearknob simply push
into the connector. Ensure you route the wires to the top of the gear lever correctly as if you get a short it takes your panel lights out. Nice to talk to you at East Kirkby.

Unfortunately I can't change the whole gear knob so am looking to see if anyone has a source for the oval plastic
top with the gears on it and that lights up.

Thanks

So one of these but the emblem/badge only?

I'm not sure it comes separately from BMW. You certainly can't use a regular emblem (which does come separately) as it comes with a sticky pad where you'd expect the light to shine through. This 6-Speed version is listed separately but I'm not sure it's genuine.

Realoem suggests it's not available seperately.

BMW on Ebay only list this.

Are you 100% sure the gear knob is glued on? It can be very, very difficult to remove. It needs a small twist and hard yank - with the roof up.

These people seem to be the online experts on BMW gear knobs if you want to check with them. They have some useful advice listed worth reading anyway.

Iv'e changed my old one so i will remove top & send it to you. PM me your address.

By the way you've got to watch out it doesn't short out & bugger up your rheostat for the lights as mine did, hence why i'm ditching it.

Thanks people was a good help, mrscalex I didn't know it was called an emblem so thats helped a lot. I took the car to a BMW independent who
took the roof down and pulled to no avail. He then looked closer and pointed out the glue at the bottom. He suggested a hacksaw was required.

Thanks Lancsbob have PM'd you my address and thank you for your kind offer.

Thanks
