Cost of replacement Dual Mass flywheel?

Post by Lancsbob »

Hi
Well had my transmission backlash sound looked at & was told all visible connections/bearings/bushes/uj's are OK
so it must be foreward of the gearbox output shaft probably meaning the flywheel/clutch, can't see it being the
gearbox itself. Can live with it as it is but it may deteriorate so am wondering :-

What kind of cost it is to replace which will probably include full clutch & release bearing, also

Do i replace with a solid flywheel conversion?

Has anyone done this conversion & if so is it any better?

Cheers Bob

Never really hear of dual mass failure on these, the 6 cylinder engine is very smooth and not really going to stress it too much. From your other thread the car is low mileage too; I doubt it is the flywheel. No known issues with them on the 3.2M either. The drivetrain clunk maybe the common clunk most Z3s exhibit in lower gears/reverse if the clutch is let out too quickly.

A single mass flywheel will leave you with a loud rattle from the gearbox at idle when in neutral.

It's more common to find the diff has relaxed and lost its preload. I've had this on my old M and my 2.8 before that.

Bob, I'd be surprised if your backlash problem is the flywheel as I'd have expected it to make a rumbling noise if it's that badly worn.
When the DMF packed up at 90k miles on my 2.8 I replaced it with a solid flywheel and clutch kit from Eurocarparts for about £500 though sometime there are 30% discount deals there so it's worth looking out for these. The solid flywheel is fine and has no problems. It's lighter that the DMF though if I was doing this again I'd have purchased a lightened flywheel from a specialist.
