Improve BMW z3 a/c - service / clean evaporator

Post by BonBon »

My A/C did not come close to my wife's 8 year old CIVIC. I tried everything from new compressor, drier and cleaning the condenser with mild caustic and water rinse.
The biggest difference was cleaning out the evaporator. Getting in there is the same procedure as to access the resistor pack. It takes about 30 mins with minimal skill level. Just a bit of a pain to access. I vacc'ed, sprayed with 50% water vinegar/mix and washed out with a nice dose of water with a garden hose. (using a jet can bend the aluminum fins)
This made the biggest difference to the a/c. Airflow up about 50% and also somewhat cooler. You can see that the evaporator was partially blocked after over 20 years in service.
