replacement thermostat..... :(
both fitted today

door gaskets were easy, just a bit of a pain to find the right allen key / torx allen key to pull the catch back.. releasing it was easy just the refitting was a bit tricky, and getting the plastic of the handle to slot in correctly all done though...

New thermostat fitted too genuine behr item... the solver top part of the thermostat is slightly different and has a lot stronger spring than the original one that was stamped 98... so obvioulsy original

serpentine belt as mine had a few crack in it, and looked like it was original... had bmw stamped on it, 105,000 miles so good for an original belt...

Removed the ac belt and replaced it, my AC not working at the moment but have proved the compressor clutch is engaging by shorting out relay contacts... possibly faulty sensor or more likely a refrigerant leak, or refidgerant top up required...

I just bought am Icarsoft code reader and adaptor to fit the 'pacman' connection. very pleased with the code reader......not quite so pleased that it 'cannot communicate with the ABS ecu'. my suspicion is that the ecu is broken!

Another 'not quite bought' in that I replaced my BMW Business radio/tape player four years ago because the radio didn't work any more. A used identical unit which has been working well until recently came courtesy of eBay. Sadly, though, a cassette got stuck in it and I thought I might swap the deck for the deck from the old, dead, unit. Luckily I am a hoarder and still had the old one, and the deck was a straight swap. Now the old one is doubly dead because the deck cannot any longer be trusted and the radio is u/s. so I might bin it...

If your car has roll bars fitted it will not have the two holes in the rear trim for the wind blocker to be fitted.
I have a 1999 1.9 no roll bars but I have two mounting holes in the rear trim with blanking caps, these are removed and the mesh wind blocker fits into the holes. There are two versions of the wind blocker the difference is the distance between the pins for early and later models. I needed the one with the shorter distance between pins but these are rare so had to settle for the larger pin measurement one and had to make up two alloy uprights fitted on the rear bulkhead with holes in the top to drop the pins into. Mine now sits farther back then it would using the correct mounting holes I have in my trim but it still functions ok.
Old post of mine on here about fitting it if you do a search. I will see if I can find it.

Oil and Air Filter from CarParts4less who were cheapest between them and Europarts who have a 55% discount offer at the moment. CarParts4less had a ACTION9 code for a 9% discount, my filters with the code applied came to £8.85.
Filters are Crossland brand.
Europarts with their 55% discount code came to £10 with the addition of a sump plug washer which I really didn't need, got a supply of these in my stock of spares already.

changed the oil and filter today, bought off eurocarparts, asked for castrol, and got the more expensive magnatec stop start instead.. which is nice.
painted some more of the wishbones and surrounding area with POR30. coming up nicely now!
and got off a stubborn bolt so i can change the other side rear ARB bush.
ohhh and took off the exhaust pump thing and capped off the hole in the engine, and the vav pipe.... and as a side note the brakes are now more responsive, so i guess there was a vacuum leak there!!!

Pot of touch up paint from Halfords for £11. Had to be ordered from the paint code. Dent and scratch on the double-skinned part of the bonnet, right through to the steel, after something came off the lorry in front of me on the motorway. Bah humbug.

Just ordered some Chipex - supposed to be a revolutionary stone chip repair kit, they have it on offer for £37 for the big kit, was dubious at first but looking at a lot of vid's on Youtube it really does seem to be a very easy rememdy - when it comes and I have cracked on with it will post a report

Well after trying the Chipex, which came out rubbish, I had to invest in a Sealey polisher (half price on Amazon) and some G3 compound - only tried one bit of it so far on the chip repairs I did but really please with the outcome. G3 really does what it says it will unlike the Chipex

Inspection II and Brake Fluid change for £290 at my local BMW specialist. Most expensive part was the oil. On an M44, it includes plugs and air filter. Cheapest part was new nut to fix a loose vibration damper, which was resonating horribly at 3k RPM, which cost me nothing. I had suspected the viscous coupling for the fan, but thankfully it wasn't that. Car sounds much better now.

I had A/C sorted on my car yesterday, used a reputable Auto Service depot who I've used before for fitting tyres that I previously purchased new from Camskill Tyres.
I have loads of service history and detailed bills covering the last 12 years or so, the last time the A/C was touched was way back in April 2007. Although the A/C worked OK the coolness level was not what I'd had on my previous model of this car which I explained to the guy at reception desk. The job took 50 mins, the gas was removed and pressure test carried out. The amount of gas taken out was in line with my thoughts that there was no major leak but the system had just been depleted since 2007.
New gas installed with added lubricant and tracer dye. You could now hang meat in the car it's that cold!!!
Normally costs £45, but got it for £19.50 on a Groupon Deal. A bargain I thought.

Picked up a spare key from Spurs fan in a coupe (Andy) and managed to strip it down and transfer the rubber button section plus the back cover strip on to my spare key. Big improvement, its now become my main key. Have to see if Andy can come up with another one so I can refurb the remaining key.

Bling stainless roll hoops and a pair of seatbelt tower covers with the roll bar cutouts, the former from Andy (spurs fan in a coupe). Only want them to complete the look of the car know they are just bling.
Bit of a pain getting them to slide into the seat belt tubes, the tubes on the roll bars was slightly larger than the tower tubes so had to put a slot in the towers to spread them enough to get the bars to drop in, just enough to get them in with the aid of a rubber mallet. Cut outs on the tower covers had to be enlarged as well for the bars to pass through.Joint is then covered using supplied O rings.

Fast delivery from Andy and the packaging was exceptional, great source for parts.

Christmas money spent on a perspex wind blocker, ordered on Tuesday delivered on Friday, fitted it and it fits like a glove to my stainless one piece hoops. Must say the Velcro on the holding strips is the strongest I've seen.

A new battery unfortunately. I always keep mine on a trickle charger when I'm not using her but it was completely dead. Looks like a collapsed cell. Mind you the old one was 7 years old.
